What Broccoli is

Broccoli is an iOS application that helps you decide whether a food product is a good choice for you right now. To do that it processes personal information you provide and, if you allow it, activity information from Apple Health. This policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it, and what you control.

Information we collect

  • Account. Your email address, used to sign you in with a one time code. If you use Sign in with Apple, we receive the identifier Apple assigns to you for Broccoli and the email address Apple shares (which may be a private relay address). We do not store passwords.
  • Profile. Weight, height, sex, date of birth, weight goal, food allergies, health conditions you choose to enter, and your app settings (motivation style, units, language, notifications).
  • Scans. Photos you take of products, labels and ingredients, detected barcodes, the product information we look up or extract, the recommendation we generate, and whether you told us you had the product anyway.
  • Apple Health (optional). With your permission we read active energy, steps, walking and running distance, workouts, and weight and height when available. We store a small daily summary alongside each scan so that the recommendation can be explained later. We never write to Apple Health, never use Health data for advertising, and never share it with anyone other than the AI model provider that produces your recommendation (see below).
  • Technical. The IP address and device description of sign in requests, kept to detect abuse, and server logs that are rotated automatically.

How we use it

Everything above is used for one purpose: producing and explaining your recommendation. For each scan, the photos, your profile (without your email or name), and your daily activity summary are sent to our servers and to an AI model provider to identify the product and generate the structured verdict. We send only what the current scan needs.

AI model providers

Broccoli uses large language models operated by third party providers. We choose providers that contractually process our data only to answer our requests and do not use it to train their models. The provider may change as the product evolves; the current list is available from support@broccoli.day at any time, and we update this policy when it changes. The provider never receives your email address, your name, or your account identifier.

Health information and safety

Allergies and health conditions are treated as safety information and always take priority over motivational or weight related advice. Broccoli does not diagnose or treat any medical condition and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Product details are read from photos and public databases and can be wrong or incomplete; always check the packaging yourself.

Sharing

We do not sell your data and do not show advertising. We share data only with processors that run the service on our behalf: our hosting provider, our file storage provider, our email provider (to deliver sign in codes), Open Food Facts (barcode lookups, which contain no personal data), and the AI model provider described above. Each of them processes data only on our instructions.

Retention and your controls

  • You can delete individual scans or your whole scan history from the app at any time.
  • You can disconnect Apple Health at any time in iOS Settings or in the app.
  • You can delete your account from Profile → Privacy → Delete Account. This immediately and permanently removes your profile, scans and photos. Encrypted database backups are kept for up to 30 days and then discarded.
  • Sign in codes expire after a few minutes and are deleted after use.
  • Scans are kept until you delete them, because your history is what lets Broccoli remember what you put back yesterday.

Children

Broccoli is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or to object to its processing. Most of this you can do in the app; for anything else, email us and we will respond within 30 days.
